- Fireworks thrown outside Parliament as MPs debate future of hunting
They usually like to chase subject foxes, deer and hares to violence, but last night pro-hunt campaigners found a different quarry - the police.
Inside the House of Commons, MPs were debating the future of animal hunting in Britain; outside, countryside demonstrators fought a pitched battle with the law, at one stage using fireworks as weapons. Eight pro-hunters were arrested before mounted police were brought in to restore order. There were also about 700-800 protesters in Parliament Square, believed to be supporters of the Countryside Action Network
Richard Burge, chief executive of the Countryside Alliance, said: "Monday will see the start of a campaign to bring home forcibly to Parliament the depth of rural concern and frustration over the Bill…"
