REAL COUNTRYSIDE ALLIANCE

Concert for Wildlife Killing

Benefit gigs for animal death! Whatever next?

A benefit gig was staged at Highclere Castle on 20 May 2006 by the Countryside Alliance - a single issue bloodsport group. Among the old rockers showing their faces (as well as their ages) were Eric Clapton, Bryan Ferry, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Mike Rutherford...

Because some people just don't know when to stop - whether it's squeezing into tight trousers, or decimating wildlife - national campaign group Animal Aid have hit back. In a viral video released, Charlie and the Spent Cartridges' 'Hunt Generation' - a spoof on The Who's My Generation - mocks the Countryside Alliance's 'Highclere Rocks' event.

Animal Aid campaigner, Fiona Pereira, comments, "Ferry, Clapton and Waters still like to think they are the bad boys of rock n' roll. But there's nothing rebellious about joining the Old Boys' club to go hunting and shooting. Just as they are rock relics from another age, so killing animals for pleasure belongs to the Dark Ages - a fact that most people can appreciate. The only punters willing to lash out £75 to watch a load of misguided old fools shuffling around on stage, are, well, misguided fools."

Countryside Alliance supporter Eric Clapton famously said:

"Vote for Enoch Powell. Enoch's our man. I think Enoch's right, I think we should send them all back. Stop Britain from becoming a black colony. Get the foreigners out. Get the wogs out. Get the coons out. Keep Britain white. I used to be into dope, now I'm into racism. It's much heavier, man. Fucking wogs, man. Fucking Saudis taking over London. Bastard wogs. Vote for Enoch, he's our man, he's on our side, he'll look after us. I want all of you here to vote for Enoch, support him, he's on our side. Enoch for Prime Minister! Throw the wogs out! Keep Britain white!"
(Said on stage at a concert in Birmingham, UK, in 1976, referring to British Conservative MP Enoch Powell. Clapton later made similar further comments to the audience later in the evening.)

The lyrics to Charlie and The Spent Cartridges' song are reproduced below. No animals were harmed in the making of this film.

The Hunt Generation
People ought to put us down
Before we join that countryside crowd
We don't have to sing for the hungry or poor
We're the hunting, shooting rock dinosaurs

CHORUS
The hunt generation
Hunt generation, baby
You thought we'd all fade away
But we're killing them foxes day by day
We're rich, we're cruel
We're the radical cause
For the hunting, shooting rock dinosaurs

We used to sing songs about the Vietnam war
Then we sent our kids to public school
Our slogan was 'leave them kids alone'
Now it's save our shooting at the stately home

REPEAT CHORUS
Eric played the concert for Bangladesh
Now the benefit gig's for animal death
And Roger said, hey break down that wall
Now he wants to kill creatures great and small
